Walks in the Andohahela
National Park

About 50 km from Fort-Dauphin you will find the large Andohahela National Park. Go with your family or friends to visit this natural treasure, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a thrilling adventure that awaits you. Because it is a true haven of biodiversity and has a variety of different climates, we can see lots of animal and plant species including dozens of lemurs, hundreds of birds with ultra -colored feathers, and numerous reptiles and amphibians. Perhaps you will tremble, crossing the Do, which is a yellow snake spotted with brown and which can reach more than 3m long!

Although this trip can be done in one day with a guide and lunch at a picnic or in a restaurant, we recommend planning 2 days for this extremely diverse park. We have a variety of activities to do in Andohahela Park, including numerous circuits by foot or by bicycle, possibility of going trekking, hiking. If you wish to extend your excursion for one night or more, the park has many places. According to your desires and your budget we will have the possibility of bivouac in the evening, or accommodations are found not far from the park. You will also find restaurants that serve local products.

After 60 km of rough roads and tracks, we will reach the park. We need an all-terrain vehicle and it takes about 3 hours to make the journey, which is 6 hours of dance exercises in the car for one day in both directions.

Hiking in the park is neither difficult nor dangerous, but is strongly recommended only with a guide, to ensure safety for everyone. The distance, the absence of signs and traffic conditions impose this precaution, not to mention the fact that Andohahela National Park covers an area of 76000 hectares.

Enjoy this… An unforgettable stay in a unique park. Discover the various vegetation of the forest with its thorny thickets:

The park has very beautiful sceneries and is home to 13 species of lemurs and 150 species of birds. The Andohahela National Park gathers three different climates and is incredibly rich in fauna and flora – it is a real crossroads between two worlds - East and South. Here there are three different climates and landscapes. In the East, it is a warm and wet climate. In the West it is a warm and dry climate. And then in the middle, there is a zone of transitions between the two rainy climates. Diversity has thus generated an extremely rich biodiversity and the many endemic species found there. This is a true paradise for nature lovers and 90 percent of plant species are medicinal. We’ll also find numerous iguanas, lemurs, reptiles and birds there.

The most popular and relatively short hike constantly follows the river to a greater or lesser distance along the riverbanks as close as possible or by climbing on the hills to take advantage of the beautiful views of the surrounding nature. We will check out the green vegetation on the northern slope and thorny thickets during the walk. We can admire the water flowing over huge patches of ocher and orange, natural basins or more or less impressive falls. We can make a stop at the big waterfall pool and swim before starting the second part of the trip. We have to cross the river from one rock to another rock and to go back to the beginning. Only one part of the walk is a little difficult, the rest of the way is simple. The end of the trek takes place in the water to cross the river. Throughout the trip we will see beautiful lizards up to 40 cm and snakes that are of good size, but are safe for people.

The circuit of Malio can be done walking and leads to two passes of the same name, before descending to Talakifeno. Malio, the rain forest portion (Parcel 1), is a good place to see the red-collared brown lemur (Eulemur collaris) and the southern bamboo lemur (Hapalemur meridionalis) during daytime hours, especially along the road to Col de Manangotry. It is also the only place to see the Andohahela sportive lemur (Lepilemur fleuretae), and a number of other species have been reported as well, including an unknown mouse lemur (Microcebus), Milne-Edwards’ sifaka (Propithecus edwardsi), aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis), and possible even some form of fork-marked lemur (Phaner), but these need to be confirmed.

There is also an excellent trail through the transitional forest of Parcel 3 at Tsimelahy. Although there are surprisingly few lemurs along this trail, it is a superb piece of transitional forest that includes baobabs (Adansonia spp.), Pachypodium spp., Alluaudia spp., and the triangle palm (Dypsis decaryi), a very distinctive species that is grown horticulturally in many parts of the world but is actually endemic to this very small transition zone. Botanically, this is one of the most interesting walks in the entire southern region of Madagascar, and it can be visited in two or three hours.

Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) and Verreaux’s sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi) can also be seen in the day in Ihazofotsy, the spiny forest portion of Andohahela (Parcel 2). Night hikes in this part of the park offer visitors the opportunity to view gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), gray-brown mouse lemur (Microcebus griseorufus), fat-tailed dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus medius), and white-footed sportive lemur (Lepilemur leucopus).
